In our modern society, we increasingly have to deal with foreign substances which, in the sum of their effects on the human body, can trigger inflammation and thus cause various diseases.
Holistic dentistry" - also known as environmental dentistry - is a completely new and interdisciplinary approach to therapy and treatment for dentists.
Why environmental dentistry?
Foreign materials in the fields of dentistry, orthopaedics and surgery, as well as drug and hormonal therapies, are almost taken for granted – in other words, they have become “normal”. We tend to forget that any intervention in our organism can also have an impact on the entire body. For example, diseased teeth or intolerance to materials can be the cause of chronic illnesses, allergies and other complaints.
The focus of environmental dentists is therefore on the comprehensive dental treatment of chronically ill patients as well as preventive treatment concepts for healthy patients.
The aim is to prevent chronic inflammatory diseases – including those far removed from the oral cavity – or to alleviate existing diseases.
Environmental dental medicine takes into account the connections between teeth and body and helps with healing in collaboration with other therapists (doctors, orthopaedists, dental technicians, osteopaths, physiotherapists, etc.)

How do we work as environmental dentists?
After a detailed questioning of the overall health situation, we carry out a thorough examination of the oral cavity to look for factors that may have triggered or could trigger an inflammatory process through long-term toxicological exposure or immune activation.
These can be displaced wisdom teeth, an undetected chronic periodontal disease or an undetected inflammation at the tip of a root. Immunologically unsuitable filling, crown, bridge, denture or implant material as well as heavy metals and bonding materials (adhesives and cements) are also possible causes.
We need to find out all of this using our toxicological, immunological and environmental medical expertise.

Oligoscan diagnostics
Holistic dental treatment should always aim to restore the bacterial balance in the oral cavity. An analysis of the minerals, trace elements and toxic heavy metals present in the body is very helpful in planning a treatment/therapy that is individually tailored to the person.
Thanks to Oligoscan II diagnostics, we are able to produce a highly precise analysis of the elements of mineral metabolism, trace elements and exposure to toxic heavy metals present in the body’s cells in a matter of seconds.
A laser device is used to take a measurement at four points in the palm of the hand. This method is non-invasive – i.e. without taking blood samples and completely painless!
The Oligoscan II system is certified as an EU medical device and, with its innovative measuring method – spectrophotometry – provides the possibility of recording intracellular mineral metabolism for the regulation of cell metabolism.

Dental toxicology

Selection of compatible dental material before tooth restoration
In scientific studies, many commercially available composites, adhesives and metallic dental materials have been found to release substances that are subsequently metabolized in the body and can have toxic effects.
In collaboration with clinics and institutes at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the Technical University of Munich and the Helmholtz Center in Neuherberg/Munich, an allergy test procedure has been developed which can be used to detect any allergies to ingredients from dental materials.
Patients with a proven allergy to such substances should not be given any dental material that can release these substances into the body.
Following an individual allergy test, we are able to select the most compatible dental material for the patient concerned before a dental restoration is carried out.

Application of essential oils in periodontology.
Aromatogram and aromatherapy
Periodontitis is a chronic recurrent infectious disease. The care of a periodontitis patient is therefore generally long-term.
Periodontal therapy is one of the most demanding tasks in the treatment of infectious diseases, which is why blanket solutions such as untargeted antibiotic therapy (consequence: development of resistance) or purely mechanical therapy without microbiological control (consequence: promotion of bacterial growth and overgrowth with aggressive bacteria) are not recommended for these patients.
Due to the widespread use of antibiotics worldwide, bacteria and germs are becoming increasingly resistant. Alternative forms of therapy are therefore increasingly coming to the fore. This includes the long-established treatment of infections with essential oils.
The advantage is obvious: the patient can use the essential oils and essential oil formulations in rinses during daily dental care. These formulations cannot be compared with a classic mouthwash, which is used for aesthetic reasons to ensure fresh breath. Essential oils are produced individually for each patient after bacteriological testing (aromatogram). They are used for the targeted, microbiologically tested treatment of periodontitis.
